Providing a comprehensive museum, library and archive dedicated to New Jersey's rich past, The New Jersey Historical Society is the oldest cultural institution in the state. Through the society's vast compilation of photographs, documents, artifacts and exhibits, visitors may delve deeply into such subjects as New Jersey's military history, cultural diversity, fashion trends, political struggles and more. Offering a rotating showcase of displays, past museum exhibits have included a photographic look at urban and suburban playgrounds, a historic look at colonial images in marketing throughout the ages and an incredible exhibit of paper sculptures made by Chinese refugees aboard the Golden Venture refugee ship. The historical society is located in downtown Newark, just down the street from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
Museum open Tue. - Sat. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Library open Wed., Thurs. and Sat. noon - 5:00 p.m.
